Kestrel is committed to reduce our carbon footprint, as part of responsible operation and conversion of coal mine related gas into usable energy. For underground coal mining, extraction of gas is fundamental to ensure safe working conditions: gas naturally occurs within the German Creek & other coal seams as part of their formation, which needs to be removed to make it safe for our mining teams. Kestrel is currently mining into the deepest part of the Kestrel deposit and with depth comes increased concentrations & intensities of methane.
We continue to investigate energy production methods and pursue available technologies to reduce our footprint and play our part in effective reduction of carbon.
Our carbon reduction projects include:
- Use of methane as energy power air cooling for underground.
- Looking to secure energy partners for reuse of gas.
- Energy efficiency across our site.
- Sourcing components of our electricity usage from renewable sources.
