We are a joint venture formed in 2018 between EMR Capital and Adaro Energy (80%) and Mitsui Coal (20%) and our coal is used in the steelmaking process all over the world. EMR Capital own a 52% share and PT Adaro Energy own a 48% share.
Both EMR and Adaro are keen investors in Metallurgical Coal.

Shane Hansen
Chief Executive Officer
With an excess of 30 years hands on experience gained from within the mining industry, combined with specific skills in Mining, Processing, Planning, Facilities management, Construction, Performance Management, Business Analysis, Business Growth and Development, Shane has positioned companies for optimal return to shareholders whilst providing strategic direction to enable growth and increased capital value. In more recent years, Shane has been instrumental in the strategic investment for companies such as BHP, Xstrata and Mitsui Coal.
Warren Bamford
Chief Financial Officer
Warren Bamford is an experienced Chief Financial Officer, leading financial and commercial teams predominantly in the mining and resources sector for over 20 years.
Prior to joining Kestrel, Warren held CFO roles with AMCI Australia, a privately owned global coal and resources group, and the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET), where he led the refinancing of its US$2.6 billion senior finance facility.
Warren’s expertise in finance and corporate governance strongly supports Kestrel’s future outlook and business strategies.
Warren holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Queensland (UQ) and is a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
Boyd Gittoes
General Manager Sales and Marketing
Boyd is a sales & marketing executive with close to two decades experience in the coal industry. Boyd earned his Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Queensland and his Master of Finance from the Financial Services Institute of Australia. Prior to his most recent role with Rio Tinto leading the coal sales & marketing team, Boyd held a number of roles within Rio Tinto including marketing manager for Rio Tinto’s coking coal portfolio across Australia and Mozambique. Boyd has previously worked in operational and technical roles across coal mines in Queensland and NSW for Rio Tinto, Anglo American and BHP.
Jess Roberson
General Manager People and Public Relations
Jess Roberson was appointed Group Manager People at Kestrel in August 2018. Jess played an important role in the transition of Kestrel Mine from Rio Tinto to Kestrel Coal Resources. Jess is an experienced HR Manager with excess of 15 years’ in coal. She has worked for a number of resource companies including Rio Tinto, Glencore and BHP. Prior to Kestrel, Jess was in Human Resources with Glencore Clermont Coal where she played a pivotal role in the sale of the mine from Rio Tinto to Glencore. She has also been part of successful negotiating teams for a number of new Enterprise Agreement’s. Jess has a wide range of HR experience in both Human Resources and Industrial Relations. Jess holds a Bachelor of Business and Human Resources from the Central Queensland University.
Peter Manton
General Manager Planning and Strategy
Peter is an Extractive Metallurgist with over 25 years experience in the resources industry in both operations and technical roles. His experience covers a wide range of commodities including diamonds, gold, copper, oil & gas, vanadium and coal. Prior to joining Kestrel, Peter held a number of leadership roles including General Manager Operations with Atlantic Ltd, General Manager Operations with Millennium Minerals and General Manager Metallurgy for Newcrest Mining.
Phil Nobes
General Manager Operations
Phil completed his Mining Engineering degree at the University of NSW and began his career in the coal industry on the BHP Graduate Program.
As part of the program, Phil transferred to Gregory Crinum in 2000 for a 12-month secondment – and has remained in Queensland ever since. While at Crinum, Phil completed his second-class ticket.
He has worked in various roles in underground and open cut coal, including Shift Undermanager, Outbye Coordinator, Development Superintendent and Operations Manager and SSE. Despite the variety in roles and time spent in open cut operations, Phil’s preferred environment remains with underground coal.
Phil is enthusiastic to be part of the Kestrel Team and looks forward to seeing the mine continue to achieve industry-leading milestones.

Michael Soeryadjaya
Chairman
Mr. Soeryadjaya was appointed Chairman of Kestrel Coal Resources in August 2024.
Mr. Soeryadjaya has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions. He is currently also a Director at PT Adaro Energy Indonesia Tbk., a Commissioner of PT Merdeka Battery Materials Tbk. as well as the President Director of PT Saratoga Investama Sedaya Tbk., an Indonesian-based investment company with a strong track record for successfully identifying, growing, and generating value from companies it invests in.
Mr. Soeryadjaya holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Pepperdine University, USA.
Owen Hegarty
Director
Mr. Hegarty was appointed director of KCR in February 2018, after being the Chairman of EMR since its inception in 2011.
Mr. Hegarty has more than 40 years’ experience in the global mining industry including 25 years with the Rio Tinto group where he was Managing Director of Rio Tinto Asia and Rio Tinto’s Australian copper and gold business from 1989 to 1994. Mr. Hegarty was the founder and Managing Director of Oxiana Limited. He was previously the Vice Chairman of ASX listed Fortescue Metals Group.
Mr. Hegarty holds a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from Monash University.
Chia Ah Hoo
Director
Mr. Chia was appointed director of KCR in April 2018.
Mr. Chia ran a contract mining company in East Kalimantan before joining PT Adaro Indonesia in 1991 as operations manager. PT Adaro Indonesia further developed his career by providing a period of study at the European business school INSEAD in 1998. Later that year he was appointed General Manager of PT Adaro Indonesia.
Mr. Chia holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Windsor in Canada.
John Chomley
Non-Executive Director
John is a chemical engineer with over 30 years experience in the resources industry. The majority of the first 17 years were spent in operational, technical, business improvement and management roles in base metal processing operations. These roles focused on the development of new operations and the significant improvement of existing ones including roles as Metallurgical Superintendent of Aberfoyle Resource’s (Australian Stock Exchange listed), Mt Gordon copper operation and Smelter Operations Leader of the Tomago Aluminium Smelter.
John joined EMR Capital as an Investment Director in 2015. Prior to joining EMR Capital John had moved into an investments, mergers and acquisitions role with the expanding Oxiana Ltd, working with many members of the current EMR Capital team since then. He later joined Tigers Realm Minerals Group in 2010 whereas Head of Business Development he was an integral member of the team that established three commodity focused public companies: Tigers Realm Coal; Asiamet Resources (copper); and NexGen Energy (uranium).
John has led cross functional teams to assess resource opportunities in many parts of the world including Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Turkey, Russia and South America. At EMR Capital John has been closely involved in many portfolio companies.
M. Syah Indra Aman
Director
Mr. Aman was appointed director of KCR in April 2018.
Mr. Aman has worked as a lawyer at the firms Minan’g, Warman, Sofyan SH & Associates and Lubis, Ganie & Surowidjojo before joining Adaro in 1996.
Mr. Aman holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Indonesia and a Master of Laws from the University of Washington.
Jason Chang
Director
Mr. Chang was appointed director of KCR in February 2018, after being the CEO of EMR since its inception in 2011.
Mr. Chang has over 20 years’ experience as a professional advisor specializing in the Asian market and the resources sector. He was previously Partner in Charge of KPMG Australia’s Asia Practice, China Practice and India Practice, at different times, and a member of KPMG Australia’s leadership team. In these roles, Mr. Chang was the head of KPMG Australia’s businesses across all service lines (advisory, tax, audit) for the Asia Australia corridor, where his primary focus was working for Chinese companies acquiring mining projects globally.
Mr. Chang holds a Bachelor of Laws, a Masters of Law and a Bachelor of Economics (Accounting) from the Monash University.
Mark Small
Director
Mr. Small was appointed director of KCR in April 2018.
Mr. Small’s introduction to Adaro was as Managing Director of a JV between BHP and Adaro in Indonesia. After Adaro acquired 100% of the Indonesian BHP assets, Mr. Small joined Adaro to assist with the development of the Metallurgical coal division. He has over 35 years’ experience in the development and management of mining ventures throughout Australia and South East Asia with a strong focus on underground longwall mining and will lead the Adaro team in the transition to ownership.
Mr. Small holds a Master’s Degree in engineering from Wollongong University and studied Mechanical Engineering at Newcastle University.
Tony Manini
Director
Mr. Manini was appointed director of KCR in February 2018.
Mr. Manini is a geologist and business development executive with over 25 years of exploration, development and operations experience in the resources industry. He worked with Rio Tinto for 14 years in various technical, commercial and management positions before joining Oxiana Limited in 2000. More recently, Mr. Manini was the Executive General Manager for exploration and business development at OZ Minerals Limited. He is also a co-founder and former CEO of the Tigers Realm Minerals Group.
Mr. Manini holds a Bachelor of Science (Geology) (Hons) from the LaTrobe University.
Nine Handajani
Director
Ms. Handajani was appointed director of KCR in June 2019.
Ms. Handajani is currently the Head of Corporate Finance – Overseas Assets for Adaro. She was previously the Director and CFO of PT Bhimasena Power Indonesia (a joint venture in which Adaro is a participant) which raised US$3.4 billion in project financing – the largest project finance deal in Indonesia.
Ms. Handajani holds a MBA of Business Administration from the University of Houston and a degree in accounting from the University of Indonesia.
Ralph Ferguson
Director
Mr. Ferguson was appointed director of KCR in March 2018.
Mr. Ferguson has over 30 years’ experience in the provision of accounting, assurance and finance related matters and is CFO of EMR. Prior to joining EMR, Mr. Ferguson had been a Senior Partner in KPMG Australia for 18 years. In that position, he has held various senior roles including Partner in charge of KPMG’s CFO Advisory Practice in Melbourne, responsible for advising CFO’s on strategy, operations and risk. Mr. Ferguson’s experience includes transaction due diligence assignments relating to mergers, acquisitions and divestments. In addition to his external client roles and internal KPMG leadership positions, he has led various strategic and operational initiatives for KPMG.
Mr. Ferguson holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne, is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia and is an ASIC registered company auditor.
