Peter Smith is the CEO of Kestrel Coal Resources with over 40 years operational experience. He has worked in a range of resource industry sectors including coal, gold, base metals and fertilizers, with the past 30 years in various senior management positions. Prior to his most recent role with ICL as EVP potash and magnesium, Peter held lead operational positions with Newcrest Mining, Lihir Gold, WMC Resources, Western Metals and Rio Tinto. Peter has extensive coal operating experience including Mine Manager positions at the Kestrel Mine (Queensland) and NSW Coal, and was previously the General Manager Development of Ensham Resources (Brisbane based private coal company with assets in Central Queensland).
Gail Jukes is a senior executive with over 20 years’ experience in finance, with a large part of her career within the Mining, Mining Services, Oil & Gas, Manufacturing and Construction industries. Prior to joining Kestrel she held various CFO roles most recently as the Australian Regional Chief Financial Officer for FLSmidth, an international cement and minerals manufacturer and service provider of mining equipment. She has held senior finance roles with Queensland Gas Corporation, and Thiess, and prior to that in the chartered accounting firms. Gail holds strong skills in the areas of commercial acumen, process improvement, governance and compliance, and is passionate about managing diverse teams and stakeholders, and driving a delivery focused team. Gail holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Queensland and is CPA qualified.
Charlie Spence is a senior manager with more than 10 years’ experience in senior management of mines and has more than 34 years’ experience in the coal mining industry including 29 years’ as an active mines rescue brigade’s member. He has worked in a range of roles having commenced in the underground sector as an apprentice electrician and progressed through (tradesman, operator, deputy, undermanager, ventilation officer, production manager, mine manager) to regional general manager level with responsibility for up to 7 sites. He joins KCR from an 18-month tenure at Bulga Underground where he was in the role of operations manager. Previous he was regional general manager for Yancoal. During Charlie’s career he has had exposure to highly productive longwall operations, board and pillar operations as well as senior management of open cut mines. His experience in mines with high gas regimes and poor geology as well a proven record in business improvement stands him in good stead to progress KCR in the future.
Boyd is a sales & marketing executive with close to two decades experience in the coal industry. Boyd earned his Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Queensland and his Master of Finance from the Financial Services Institute of Australia. Prior to his most recent role with Rio Tinto leading the coal sales & marketing team, Boyd held a number of roles within Rio Tinto including marketing manager for Rio Tinto’s coking coal portfolio across Australia and Mozambique. Boyd has previously worked in operational and technical roles across coal mines in Queensland and NSW for Rio Tinto, Anglo American and BHP.
James Lacey has over 15 years of extensive commercial experience.James earned his Business degree and MBA from University of Queensland and his Law degree from Queensland University of Technology.He is admitted as a lawyer in Queensland and England, having worked in both private practice and in-house roles for Matheson, Minter Ellison and British Gas in Australia and the United Kingdom. In these roles James was involved in offshore oil and gas, infrastructure, PPP and energy regulation. More recently James has worked in commercial roles across Rio Tinto which has included category management, capital procurement and Transformation.
Jess Roberson has 13 years of Human Resources experience, all within coal mining. Prior to joining Kestrel she held various other roles within the Human Resources department at Glencore’s Clermont Open Cut. Jess also worked for BHP designing and testing the HR & Payroll 1SAP system based in Singapore and Brisbane. Jess brings a wealth of industrial and employee relations knowledge to the team. Jess completed her Business degree from CQ University.
Tania is an experienced Geological professional with over 15 years mining experience in Australia, Asia-Pacific & Africa (underground & open pit), 5 years in government regulation, resource management & compliance. Born & bred in Ballarat Victoria, Tania graduated with Honours in Geology & entered the mining industry with BHP Cannington in 1999 – from graduate to working in ops, business improvement & drill contract management. At Southern Rural Water in 2003, Tania managed water across southern half of Victoria. She has worked directly with farmers & communities in compliance, technical & business improvement, assessments, conflict resolution, planning, legislation & resource management. Tanis completed a Masters in Hydrogeology & Water Management in 2009.
Tania re-entered mining in 2008 at Ballarat Goldfields managing strategic planning & water. Tania now lives in Brisbane, after commencing with Lihir Gold, working across Queensland, PNG & West Africa. There Tania developed IFC SEIA, tropical-geothermal water management processes. At Newcrest in 2010, following the LGL acquisition, Tania set up group level water & tailings management across all operations & projects across Asia-Pacific. Tania attained a “Masters of Strategic Foresight” in late 2013, taking the opportunity to start her own business, “See Built Earth” which works across resources & water management in problem solving, systems understanding & futures planning.
