Kestrel mine is located 40km north of Emerald in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and has been in operation since 1992. Kestrel Coal Resources has operated the mine since 2018 and was awarded the Australian Mining Monthly (AMM) Mine of the Year in 2019. We have an approved life of mine until 2033 and reserves to 2046 with the potential to increase further.
What we do
Whether it’s our hands on people doing it the smart way, our leaders out in front shining a light on the path forward, our professionals setting us up for success, or our local community who contributes so much to our way of life – we are One Kestrel
Approximately 250 tonnes of metallurgical coal
are required to build a single offshore wind turbine, being used to construct every main component, including the generator, blades, tower and foundation.
We supply our coal all around the world
Kestrel produces high energy coal called Coking or Metallurgical Coal which is shipped to key markets in Asia and all over the world to be used in the steel making process. Coking Coal is the only viable way at the moment to make steel which forms the framework of our life.
100% of Kestrel product is shipped from Gladstone Port in Queensland to customers all over the world. Steel mills and coke makers across Asia, Europe, and South America covet Kestrel coal’s niche coking properties. India is Kestrel’s largest market, followed closely by North-East Asia
