Coking coal is mining from the German Creek Seam, which ranges from 2.4m to 3.2m, and makes up one of the several coal seams in the German Creek Formation. The German Creek Formation is a 120m thick layer of fine to medium-grained quartz-lithic sandstone with interbedded siltstone and claystone which contains the Corvus, Tieri, Aquilla and Pleiades seams, with German Creek seam being the lowest of the coal seams making up the formation.

The typical strata directly above the German Creek Seams consist of interbedded to interlaminated sandstone and siltstone sequences. Making a strong and stable roof stratum for mining of the German Creek seam.

 

The immediate floor of the German Creek Seam is typically composed of interbedded to interlaminated carbonaceous mudstone, siltstone and sandstone, with varying strengths but generally very competent floor for mining purposes.
